William
Lescaze's arrival from Switzerland in the 1920's coincided with a
restlessness on the part of certain architectural circles with the
seemingly endless historic revivals of the time. Lescaze sought new
opportunities and found them in his partnership with architect George
Howe(1886-1955). Together, they created what is probably the first
International Style building on the East Coast in their Oak Lane
Country Day School Kindergarden building of 1929(demolished 1960).
Their 4 year partnership resulted in the landmark PSFS (Philadelphia
Savings Fund Society Building) at 12th and Market Streets-a key example
of the American response to and expresion of modernism. Efficiency of
planning, including the revolutionary idea of situating the banking
floor above street-level retail stores, was augmented by the so called
"manufactured weather" inside.
Lescaze's Roy Spreter Studio
(1933-34), designed for the artist who created the corporate imagery
for Camel cigarettes, brought cutting edge modernism to the suburbs of
Philadelphia. Strong, clean, abstract lines dominate, with a rough
stone base. Here, the stone is more a textural contrast to the white
box enclosure. The integrated garage was a novelty at the time. The
industrial windows, perfect for an artist's studio, provided ample
natural light to the interior. 2004-2009 addition by Martin Jay Rosenblum
